Four young men, all from noveaux riche families, go to a beach, where they meet a girl who possesses a ghostly beauty—a beauty so striking that one of the men attempts to rape her, in the sea.
However, he immediately falls ill and dies... and the girl disappears. His friend, believing the girl responsible for his death, follows her to Hanoi, where he plans to strangle her and then hang her, making it seem as if she committed suicide. Before he can carry out his plan, he is found hung himself. The third man, determined to avenge his friends, traces the girl to Ho Chi Minh city. He plans to run her over with his motorcycle, but he also is killed—on that very motorcycle--in a mysterious accident.
The fourth man is his uncle. Also determined to take vengeance, he secretly investigates the girl’s background, and discovers that, in fact, she had not killed the three deliberately, but seems to possess some power that causes those who would harm her to be killed by the same methods they would use against her. Since his plan had originally been to poison her, the fourth man now fears that he himself will die of poison, and tries to find the girl in order to ask her forgiveness. When
he goes to her house, he finds the only one there is an old lady. She tells him the story of the girl’s origins. It was that the girl had been born under a curse that made her an unwilling instrument of vengeance against the evils of the world. Having discovered this background, the fourth man managed to discover that the girl has fled to the central region of the country, haunted by the memories of the deaths she has caused, the evil ones who have died before her eyes. The fourth man follows her there in order to ask her forgiveness etc.

The novel contains layers of complexity difficult to describe in a synopsis: the relations between the four men, the tragic life of the fourth, and the eventful life of the girl. It’s ending is both bittersweet and compassionate. The first edition of the novel, in October 2002, sold out its 20,000 copy run, and in the last ten years it has been sold out over 100,000 copies and has been received by the public and critics as a provocative and controversial novel.
